Piece of cake

Well the tooth extraction went very smoothly. Turns out that what I had was not a full fledged wisdom tooth, it was more like a baby, superfluous tooth. There was no cutting of bone or anything like that, he just had to cut it out, loosen it, and then pull it out. I didn’t even need a prescription level pain killer. This is great because I have a 4 day weekend. I’m planning to go down to my father’s, I was afraid that his tooth thing would ruin the good time I had planned… Woohoo! 4 days of relaxing!

Just thought you should know…

Paul Rogers singing Queen songs is an abomination unto the Lord. May they all be smitten by a righteous and just God. That’s all…

A weird week

I was dreading this week and the next at work since the original plan was for me to work 6 days a week. As it turns out, I pretty much worked a normal schedule this week and I’ll end up having a three day weekend at the end of the next! That’s the good news, I’ll spend that long weekend at my dad’s recovering from my tooth extraction, that’s the bad… I went to get my glasses on thursday, the girl took one look at the prder as she brought it out for me and said, “Oh, these are the wrong lenses!” Why she couldn’t have noticed that before she called me or the three days from when she did call me to when I showed up I don’t know. I should have them next week… We’ll see what else this week has in store for me.

Glasses tomorrow

I’m going to go get my glasses tomorrow after work. I’m still a little ambivalent about the whole thing, it’s going to be an adjustment. We’ll see how it goes

More dental work

My wisdom teeth came in with no problems years ago. It was hoped that they would help get rid of the gap in my teeth, that didn’t work out so well… Anyway, I actually have another set of wisdom teeth right above the ones that came in. Till now they have been dormant. I felt a little soreness this morning and I asked about it when I went to the dentist today. Well it looks like one of them is trying to come out. Not only is it trying to come out, it’s trying to come out through the top of my mouth… So I’m going to have it extracted on the 24th. It’ll be the biggest medical procedure I’ve ever been through. People tell me that it’s no big deal, but I’m still a little anxious. I’m just glad this is happening now and not 3 months from now. Whew!

Didn’t do anything today…

I never even left the house… That’s the trouble with taking on extra days of work, I feel as though I should really relax on my one day off a week. I dunno, maybe I’m entitled but the problem is that nothing gets done. Well, I did do the laundry and the dishes that’s not much but it IS something.

Caught a few episodes of Miami Ink. It’s a show based on a tattoo parlor in Miami. I’ll admit to having the same negative attitude towards tattoos as my mother. Especially on women. It just seems such a waste of beautiful skin. This show has shown me that there are some good tattoos though. And there are even some good reasons to get them. They seem to have at least one “memorial” tattoo per episode. One of the artists dod a really nice job for a couple that had one of their kids drown 3 years ago. The image was amazing, and I can see the appeal of carrying that around with you. The last episode I saw had a recovering meth addict put a “hell” tattoo on his arm along with the chapter and verse of something from Isiah. Gotta say that it was a remarkable piece of work. His intention was to work with other recovering addicts, that tattoo will definitely establish some instant credibility…

“Why be Happy when you could be normal?”

Have you ever listened to someone for a couple of moments are realize that they are brilliant beyond anything you could ever hope to achieve? I’ve had that happen a couple of times, and it’s just happened again. I downloaded Bill Moyer’s series called “Faith and Reason”,he interviews people and discusses what they think about those things. This one has Jeanette Winterson, the author of “Weight”. It’s a retelling of the Hercules/Atlas myth. She talks about faith, myth, writing, independence, and a whole bunch of other interesting things. If you like writing, stories, reason, faith, or just a really good chat, check out the podcast. You can find it here:

feed://www.pbs.org/moyers/podcast.xml

(It’s the july 7th one)

or you can go to the Apple Music Store and search for it under podcasts. The title of this post comes from something her mother told her, it’s a great story and she’s a great speaker. As a bonus, Will Power speaks about myths and musicals… it’s fun, check it out!

“Alternative” fuels

On monday I watched part of a program on Cspan. It was a commission of a handful of governors gathered to discuss so called alternative fuels. Several things stuck me… First off, there was a guy there that represented over 200 different companies involved in the mining industry speaking about coal, oil from coal, etc. I was appalled at how terrible a public speaker he is. If you are going to represent 200 companies, the least you could do is memorize your speech or at least not get confused by your own note cards… Predictably, one of the industry representatives (ethanol?) was pushing for both federal and state “help”. According to him, these companies would never get off the ground if they were not subsidized. Imagine my surprise when the governor of Montana told him (and the various execs in the audience) that it is up to industry to make this happen. He pointed out that all of the greatest technological advances have come, and will come from the private sector. Not bad for a democrat:-) Of course he later advocated a taxpayer based hedge for the industries by recommending a price floor for the new types of fuels. His idea is to have the federal government pay the difference to producers of alternative oil production if the price of oil ever falls below $30 a barell. The idea is that wall street will rush to fund investment in these plants if there is a guaranteed minimum of revenue. I agree with him that it will be a pretty good bet that the price will never get that low. It’s still gambling with other people’s money though. This is a classic example of an ok sounding idea being a symptom of political largess. This particular idea isn’t so bad, but his caviler attitude towards risking other people’s money is worrisome. A dead giveaway is the fact that he advocates federal money and not tax money from the great state of Montana to be used…

Web site update

I’ve updated my “recently read books” section on my website. I predicted that I would fall behind and I did… Anyway, I put up three books that were read fairly recently. Two by Gibran and one by Hayek. You can see them here.

Eyeglasses shopping

Wow, I can not believe how expensive eyeglasses frames can be. It was rather odd trying on different glasses, I couldn’t get used to seeing myself with them on. Nothing looked right. I went in prepared to do the whole Buddy Holly look, but that really didn’t work on me. I ended up choosing some frames that were fairly inconspicuous, not at all what I had anticipated. I was dissuaded from buying Zeiss lenses since my prescription was so slight. That’s not a great sales technique, but I took their word on it. I did get the antireflective coatings. I know how important they are in photography, can’t imagine not using them on my glasses. I should consider getting some sunglasses, I anticipate using those quite a bit over there…
