It’s started…

I’ve been wondering when it would happen. I figured that once I had my plans figured out, a woman would come into my life and screw it all up. Well, to get to that point, women have to be interested in me first… I was at the bank the other morning as part of my job when this SYT says, “So, what’s your name?” This wasn’t any old greeting, she was actually flirting with me! And I flirted right back… I figure that I’ll become more and more irresistible as my trip comes closer until women are flinging themselves at me… C’mon ladies, I’m playing to lose!:-) LOL, yeah right, I wish…

I love this song…

“Rock Lobster” by the B-52’s is one of my favorites. For those of you that haven’t heard it before, it can best be described as the theme song to a “B” surf/horror film. It is nutty, and the gals make some amazing sounds. My favorite memory of this goes back to my college days. It was finals week, and everyone in the darkroom was stressed beyond belief. Rock Lobster came on the radio (thank you WICB) and we went nuts. The monitor on duty (can’t remember who… Judy? Tracy?) turned up the volume and we all started dancing as if we were in go go cages, doing the swim, imagining we were on shindig or something. It was hilarious… It was also just what we needed. Ahh, memories…

Another great report from Yemen.

I swear, the more read about this place, the more excited I become about it. Check out Becky’s blog here. She has links to her other blogs about Yemen on the right side. She’s an American woman and had no problems at all over there. I can’t wait! Read the blog and look at her pictures and still tell me I’m crazy…

The French are nuts

OK, let me get this straight. Young people all around France are marching and rioting to protest a new law that will go into effect in April. The law allows employers to fire young workers at any time within their first two years of their employment. The French Government believes, rightly I might add, that this law will encourage firms to hire more young people. Why? It is almost impossible to fire someone right now, so firms are hesitant to hire new people, they do not want to be saddled with excess employees in case of a downturn in the economy. Wow, imagine risking being fired within the first two years of employment, that would suck wouldn’t it? I cannot relate to the anger over this proposal…

Here’s the thing I don’t get about the protesters. The current arrangement has resulted in an unemployment rate of 23% for people under the age of 25. 23%!!! If you look at “impovrished” (AP’s term) people under 25, the unemployment rate is 50%! You can think what you want about American labor markets and how fair they are, but I can tell you that at least people can get jobs! The French system is supposed to be “fair” and it’s supposed to “protect” workers from those greedy capitalists. but in reality, it hurts the people they are trying to help. Workers in France don’t need protections, they need jobs! I am amazed at both the state of denial of the protesters and the gumption of the government to pass such unpopular legislation. That’s the hard part about entitlements, people don’t want to give them up once they have been given to them, so there is a lot of political collateral damage when they get around to fixing problems.

More on Pandora Radio

This is the customizable internet radio station I mentioned earlier… OK it turns out that they have both indie and mainstream artists. I finally figured out that since my first three group recommendations were indy artists, I got a lot of other indy groups, duh! I have since gotten some other, more mainstream groups, including Kelly Osbourne which I… Um, I kind of liked it. I am a little horrified at this prospect, but it points to the greatness of this format. Any radio station that plays Fugazi, Bratmobile, Bikini Kill, AND Kelly Osbourne is OK in my book… Go check them out here. I’m going to try a more early rock format tonight. You know, Buddy Holly, Bill Haley, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. Should be fun!

Enough!

OK, I’ve got enough tubes… Even if I were to make 3 amps from every type of out put tube own, I have enough tubes for the rest of my life. There is still a temptation to buy them as i see them since you can’t get these, or at least this type of quality any more, but sanity must prevail! It’s time I made these tools instead of a collectable. I think that I will be able to start my power supply project once my multimeters come in. After that, it’ll be several weeks before I buy some output transformers and begin my amp experimenting in ernest…

Great internet radio

www.pandora.com is a great internet radio site. A friend steered me towards it (thanks Galen!) and I love it. What you do is tell it a group or song that you really like. It will then select songs that are actually what you requested or similar to them. I think they only play indie bands, so there’s a good chance that you haven’t heard of the people that come up, but that’s a good thing! I put in Bratmobile, Southern Culture on the Skids, Fugazi, and Billy Bragg and I love what they’ve done so far. You can also set up different “stations” that play different types of music. You gotta have broadband, but it’s a quick way to get an injection of coolness and bands you’ve never heard of.

The Aristocrats

Finally saw the movie today. It’s really more of a documentary than a performance film, there’s only a couple of examples of the joke being told the whole way through. It’s mostly comics talking about the joke and snippets of them performing it. There are a couple of standouts. Sarah Silverman is amazing, and there’s another woman who does an art school inspired one that is pretty good as well. George Carlin does a good job of giving insight into the joke. The joke was seemingly written for Gilbert Gotfreid, his rendition has forever changed my associations to the words Popeye and longshoremen.

At first, the joke operates purely on shock value. The acts described are beyond horrible and you can’t believe the images that they conjure up. The mediocre comics stay in the shock realm, the punch-line is anticlimactic and what is funny is the shocking acts that he thought of. The better comics take it beyond that. They too start off with shock, but as they go along, something changes. You can get anesthetized to descriptions of incest, bestiality, necrophilia, etc. What comes to the fore is the comics ability to string you along and tell a story. The key is to tell it in a way such that the comic doesn’t see what the big deal is about the acts. He can’t be offended, or even excited by these things. If it is delivered properly, the only indication that the comic knows how terrible the acts are is in the irony of the name of the act. In some ways, it tests the comic’s joke telling abilities to the max.

My favorite thing on the DVD is a variation on the joke. I don’t know the comedienne’s name, but she showed what a great delivery she has with jokes. She looks and sounds as sweet and nice as can be, and tells the entire thing in a soothing, wondrous voice.
“A man walks into a talent agent’s office and says, “I have a great act for you, you’ll love it!”
“What kind of act is it?”
“It’s a family act, there’s a mother, a father, Timmy an 11 year old son, and Suzie the 8 year old daughter eating dinner together. It’s a wonderful dinner and they all enjoy it very much. The maid comes out and starts to clear the dishes and the mother suggests that they retire into the drawing room for some after dinner fun.
In the drawing room, the mother braids Suzie’s beautiful blonde hair while the father and Timmy play chess. The maid comes out with strawberries and cream and they all have a wonderful dessert.”
“That sounds wonderful! What a nice act. What do you call it?
“The motherfucking cocksuckers.”

Obviously it’s a lame joke, but with the right delivery it’s laugh out loud funny. I don’t think a guy would ever get the same reaction as a sweet natured woman telling the joke. If you want to get a feel for the actual aristocrats joke, google south park aristocrats and see the clip from the movie. It’s actually pretty good, the funny part not so much being the joke itself but the reaction to it. Even the reaction of Cartman telling it is pretty funny. None of this is for the faint of heart or the easily offended, but if you want a glimpse into how a comic’s mind works and how a joke works, check out The Aristocrats.
